We have extended the deadline for applications to the Construction Codes Advisory Board to December 6, 2013. Available positions represent organized labor, general contractors, and apartment building owners and operators. As a board member, you would help review codes that affect the design and construction of buildings and Seattle’s built environment. DPD relies heavily on the board’s advice, as do the city’s elected officials.
2014 Seattle Electrical Code Update
The DPD Electrical Program has started reviewing the Seattle Electrical Code for changes in 2014. The last code change was in 2008, so it is time for an update. The update will include reviewing changes in the 2011 and 2014 editions of the National Electrical Code and the latest WAC rules adopted by the State of Washington.
City Council to Consider Omnibus Legislation
DPD is responsible for routine maintenance of the Land Use Code. DPD has prepared code amendments called an “omnibus” bill because it is a collection of amendments. The City Council’s Planning, Land Use and Sustainability Committee will hold a public hearing to take comments on the proposed amendments on December 11, 2013 in the City Council Chambers.
Unreinforced Masonry Retrofit Policy Development Update
DPD has hired a consultant team to perform a benefits cost analysis on the unreinforced masonry (URM) retrofit policy options in the draft recommendations prepared by the URM Policy Committee in January 2013. The analysis will provide information on financing and regulatory implementation options that better align benefits and costs of a possible mandatory retrofit program for URMs. The report will provide more information to the Policy Committee before it makes its final recommendations, and will inform decisions by the Mayor and City Council on a mandatory retrofit program.

Stadium District Study Update
DPD City Planning has been studying ways to create a stronger, more vibrant stadium district while preserving industry in the Duwamish Manufacturing Center. In November, two sets of recommendations will be published for public review: 1) recommendations for Comprehensive Plan amendments relating to the stadium district, and 2) recommendations intended to strengthen land use protections for industry in the Duwamish Manufacturing Center.
New Commissioners Sought for Seattle Design Commission
The City is looking for new Seattle Design Commission members to fill two upcoming vacancies – one for a registered architect and the other for an experienced surface water management design professional, preferably a civil engineer. Both positions will start their terms in March 2014. Deadline to apply is December 15, 2013.
Rental Registration Director’s Rule Available for Public Comment
In October 2012, the Seattle City Council passed the Rental Registration and Inspection Ordinance (RRIO) to help ensure that all rental housing in Seattle is safe and meets basic housing maintenance requirements. All rental properties in Seattle are required to register with the City starting in 2014 and will be inspected at least once every 10 years.

DPD released a new Tip on businesses involved with Marijuana, an updated Tip about subdivisions, and two draft Director’s Rules related to rental housing.
Design Review Board Member Openings
The Design Review Program is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill 12 upcoming openings on the city of Seattle’s Design Review Boards. The deadline for submitting an application is December 10, 2013. The volunteer positions will begin April 4, 2014 when retiring board members’ terms expire.
