DPD has reached another step in the comprehensive update of Seattle’s Shoreline Master Program (SMP). Seattle’s SMP submittal package was delivered to the Department of Ecology (Ecology) in February 2013 after City Council passed the SMP Ordinance on January 22, 2013. Ecology has reviewed this material and on August 2, 2013 Ecology informed DPD that the SMP submittal is complete, meeting the requirements of WAC 173-26-100 and 110.
Welcoming Michael Jenkins as New Seattle Design Commission Director
We are excited to welcome Michael Jenkins back to DPD as the Director of the Seattle Design Commission. The Seattle Design Commission advises the Mayor, City Council and City departments on the design of capital improvement projects, as well as projects on City land, in the City right-of-way, or constructed with City dollars.
Seeking Three Representatives to Fill Positions on Construction Codes Advisory Board
Mayor Mike McGinn invites applicants to fill three openings on the Construction Codes Advisory Board. The Construction Code Advisory Board advises DPD. The work involves reviewing codes that affect the design and construction of buildings and the City’s built environment. DPD relies heavily on the board’s advice, as do the city’s elected officials.

Join DPD at the Seattle Design Festival
The Seattle Design Festival is the region’s largest public design event. Every September, the festival brings together experts, city leaders, and citizens to celebrate and explore the ways design improves the quality of our lives. This year’s theme, “Design in Health,” offers more than 60 events. It features large-scale installations, home tours, walking tours, films, lectures, exhibitions, competitions, activities, pop-up parklets, and more.
23rd Avenue Action Plan – Turning Passion into Action
Join DPD on September 21 for our last community meeting featuring an open house and community action team workshop. At the open house, the community will have an opportunity to review and comment on the draft 23rd Avenue Action Plan to ensure it reflects the shared community vision developed over the past year. There will also be a Community Resource Fair at the open house, where the community will be able to connect with organizations already doing great work in the neighborhood.
U District Urban Design EIS Public Scoping Meeting
You are invited to attend a scoping meeting for the U District Urban Design EIS (Environmental Impact Statement) on September 24. The EIS will study potential impacts of implementing the U District Urban Design Framework, which was created by members of the community and City planners throughout 2012 and 2013. The upcoming meeting will describe the EIS process, draft zoning alternatives, and topics to be considered in the EIS document.

Seattle Arena Draft Environmental Impact Statement Available
This afternoon, notice was posted regarding the availability of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the Seattle Arena and the beginning of the 45 day comment period. Additional public notice will be sent for upcoming public hearings to take comment on the DEIS.
SEPA Exemption for Most Telecom Projects
July 28, a change to the Washington State SEPA regulations went into effect related to permits for telecommunication devices. Although Seattle’s SEPA Ordinance and SEPA Director’s Rules have not yet been updated, the state regulations apply to relevant permits in Seattle. Generally, the typical telecommunications applications for permit at DPD will no longer require SEPA.
