DPD has completed an existing conditions report to provide a platform of facts and analysis in support of creating an urban design framework (UDF) for the central Ballard area. As we develop the Ballard UDF, we are collaborating with the Ballard Partnership for Smart Growth, as well as conducting broad community outreach. Our planning will address four central issues.

Pedestrian Retail Areas Mapping Project
DPD would like your input on the Pedestrian Retail Areas Mapping Project, a study to promote more walkable neighborhood business districts in several areas of the city. This project, conducted at the City Council’s request, would involve adding a pedestrian zone designation to existing Neighborhood Commercial Zones. We are also considering adding new rules in pedestrian zones (such as wider sidewalks and overhead weather protection) that would apply to both existing and new pedestrian areas.
Adjustments to DPD’s Pre-Submittal Conference Process
We have updated our pre-submittal conference application and scheduling process. We now have separate applications for the land use and construction pre-submittal appointment requests, and we changed the fee payment process.
Construction Material Recycling and Reporting Requirements
As of January 2014 all construction and demolition projects in Seattle will need to keep the following material out of disposal containers and transfer station disposal areas: metal, cardboard, and new construction gypsum scrap materials. Asphalt paving, bricks, and concrete are already banned from disposal. The expanded disposal ban will not apply to other targeted recyclable materials such as carpet, plastic film wrap, clean wood, and tear-off asphalt shingles until 2015.
