On December 19, 2011, the Seattle City Council approved new land use standards and maximum building heights for the West Seattle Triangle neighborhood. DPD planners have been working with members of the community since spring 2010 to ensure that new development in the area is transit- and pedestrian-oriented.
Seattle Green Building – Building a Better Seattle
Since 1999, the City Green Building team has been working to make sustainable development standard practice in the City of Seattle – first working as an interdepartmental team from across multiple City departments and then as a combined, yet still multidisciplinary, unit within DPD. City Green Building is now moving on to our next iteration to better align our work with that of our colleagues working on environmental policy, sustainable communities and development services.
Northgate Light Rail Station Area Community Design Study
On December 8, DPD planners shared three draft urban design concepts with the public. The concepts were developed following a late July open house. The three concepts illustrate a range of ideas for the evolution of a denser neighborhood district in the vicinity of the Northgate transit center, including different arrangements of open space and future development near the light rail station.
Seattle City Council Approves West Seattle Gateway Neighborhood Rezone
Seattle City Council approved today C.B. 117294 and Resolution 31342, enacting new land use rules and maximum building heights for the “West Seattle Triangle”neighborhood. Community advocates and city planners framed the new rules in hopes of encouraging new development in the area to be more mixed-use and pedestrian-oriented.

Housing Seattle addresses important gaps in Seattle’s housing market
Today the Seattle Planning Commission released Housing Seattle, a report that analyzes housing information from the Census, American Community Survey as well as market data.
“The action strategy we put forward today will help Seattle address important gaps in our housing market and disparities among certain segments of the population,” stated Planning Commission Chair Leslie Miller, “Seattle is a stronger, more prosperous city if we have diversity in people who live and work here.”
Storm Drain Insert Reminder
With onset of the rainy season, the City of Seattle’s Department of Planning and Development (DPD) is reminding builders working in Seattle to inspect and maintain any temporary storm drain inserts they have installed as part of construction projects.
Northgate Light Rail Station Area – Future Urban Design and Development Options
The City of Seattle has drawn up options that illustrate future urban design and development possibilities for the Northgate Light Rail Station area south of Northgate Mall. They include interesting ideas for creating urban plazas, active and green streetscapes, and a more complete neighborhood district near the light rail station.
DPD Recommends Comprehensive Plan Amendments
DPD has sent to Council the department’s recommendations for annual amendments to Seattle’s Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan is a collection of City-adopted goals and policies to guide growth over a 20-year period, currently 2004-2024. State law allows the City to make changes to the plan once a year. In April 2011 individuals, groups, elected officials, City Councilmembers, and City departments submitted proposed changes. Council held a hearing in June, and subsequently directed DPD to evaluate 13 proposals.
