Please note corrected workshop location for Broadview-Bitter Lake-Haller Lake: Bitter Lake Community Center, 13035 Linden Avenue.
DPD and DON, in partnership with Neighborhood Advisory Committees, are holding two community workshops to confirm priorities and define what needs to be done to achieve the community’s goals. This will be the second of four community-wide meetings to update two of Seattle’s neighborhood plans: Broadview – Bitter Lake – Haller Lake Vision 2020 Neighborhood Plan, and the Rainier Beach 2014: A Plan for a Sustainable Future. Neighborhood plans are an important part of Seattle’s Comprehensive Plan. Completed in 1999, these plans are now 12 years old and need to be updated. Community ideas drive the direction of the updates.
This past March, several hundred neighbors from each community shared why they chose their neighborhood, what’s important to keep, what’s missing, and what needs attention. For example, we heard that Broadview-Bitter Lake-Haller Lake would like:
- Places where neighbors come together to shop, dine, and play
- To preserve the neighborhood’s natural beauty and character
- To make Aurora Avenue North more hospitable and pleasant
- To complement growth with urban amenities and sidewalks
- Support for community program, events, and organization
- To walk and bike safely
We heard that Rainier Beach should be:
- Rich in cultural and physical resources, but with better ways to link people, organizations, public institutions and places.
- A resilient and interconnected neighborhood with diverse households, supported by strong social and cultural institutions and services.
- A neighborhood that provides access to the resources necessary to live safe, healthy lives.
- A natural and man-made environment that promotes individual and community health.

Neighborhood Advisory Committees (NAC), consisting of community members who are passionate about their community and understand the importance of engaging others in this work, are advising the City on the update. They will use the results of this meeting to identify actions that the City and community can take to address neighborhood issues. In Rainier Beach, the City and NAC are working with the Rainier Beach Community Empowerment Coalition to coordinate this meeting with the Coalition’s mission to build community capacity to successfully address critical issues and enhance quality of life.
As part of updating neighborhood plans the City is using a number of outreach and engagement strategies including the innovative approach of connecting with historically under-represented communities by means of Planning Outreach Liaisons (POLs). Under the direction of the Department of Neighborhoods in partnership with the Department of Planning and Development, bicultural and/or bilingual POLs serve as a vital component of the Neighborhood Plan outreach effort.
The next meetings, scheduled for early this fall, will present the draft plans for addressing community ideas.
