This article has been updated to correct the mandatory use dates of the 2012 codes.
The 2012 Seattle building, energy, residential, mechanical, fuel gas, existing building, plumbing and fire codes were approved by the City Council on September 16. The building, plumbing, mechanical, and fuel gas codes become effective October 26. The residential, existing building, and energy codes take effect October 27. We will have a 60-day transition period during which you can use either the 2009 or the 2012 codes. The 2012 codes will become mandatory on December 26 and December 27, 2013.
We’re working to make the code books available as soon as possible. In the meantime, the legislation adopting the codes is posted at www.seattle.gov/dpd/
codesrules/changestocode/BuildingCodeUpdate/ProjectDocuments/. If you want to be notified when we know more about the code schedule, you can subscribe to our technical codes mailing list on the same page.
