Since early 2013, DPD has worked with a Stadium District Study advisory group consisting of business and property owners, operators of the sports stadiums and teams, and neighborhood representatives. We held two walking tours with Feet First, and talked to community members about the stadium area at the Seattle Design Festival in September.
The Stadium District project is studying:
- A new Stadium District planning area to focus on sports and entertainment uses while allowing a range of other businesses and industries
- Allowing hotels which are currently prohibited in many areas near the stadiums
- Encouraging more housing on key sites right next to Pioneer Square and the Chinatown/International District
- Improving open spaces and sidewalks such as an Occidental Avenue Promenade near the stadiums
The City Council will consider the Stadium District Study recommendations as part of the 2013 Comprehensive Plan amendment docket, and decide which ideas to make a part of the plan.
