The Washington state 2021 Construction Codes effective date is currently Oct 29, 2023. This Building Connections article provides more information on the delayed implementation of the state codes.
The target 2021 Seattle Code implementation date is delayed to no sooner than early 2024 as we continue our City ordinance process. Seattle cannot implement these codes any sooner than the state effective date.
This code cycle, SDCI proposed new code changes at the state and national level to minimize new local amendments. Links to the 2021 Washington state code amendments can be found on the 2021 Seattle Code Adoption website. We are adopting most of the Washington state changes and carrying forward most of our existing local amendments. We do not have significant new Seattle amendments this code cycle. The exception is the energy code. The 2021 Energy Code changes are posted on our 2021 Seattle Code Adoption Project Documents webpage.
Since July 1, 2023, SDCI has accepted applications designed to the 2021 Seattle Codes when accompanied by a code modification request. If you have questions on using the 2021 code for your project or if there are specific provisions within the 2021 code that you would like to request to use on your project designed to the 2018 codes, please schedule a construction pre-submittal conference.
