Seattle Public Utilities Design Standards & Guidelines

Workers in safety gear inspect a large drainage pipe.Seattle Public Utilities is pleased to announce that the SPU’s Design Standards & Guidelines (DSG) V5.0 is available on the SPU website.

Over 20 owners of the guideline chapters and numerous contributors updated the Design Standards & Guidelines to reflect our current design practices. Users of the guidelines are encouraged to provide feedback, which we will consider for future inclusion or revisions.

SPU has been publishing the Design Standards & Guidelines since 2008, with updates in 2010, 2016, and 2021. This will be our fifth update to the DSG, and we anticipate making updates every three years to the guidelines in the future or as needed.

The DSG covers many aspects of design at SPU, including the design process, permitting, water infrastructure, drainage and wastewater infrastructure, electrical, SCADA, and physical security to name a few. It provides guidelines on how SPU does design and a resource for consultants working on City of Seattle projects.

If you have questions or feedback on the DSG, email us at spu_dsg@seattle.gov.
