The Seattle construction codes are being updated to the 2021 code editions and include the building, residential, existing building, energy, mechanical, plumbing, fuel gas, and fire codes. The Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code is also being updated to the 2023 edition. The target implementation date for the 2021 Seattle Construction Codes is delayed to no sooner than September 30, 2024.
The Construction Codes Advisory Board is evaluating the Mayor’s Office recommendation to eliminate recently proposed 2021 Seattle Energy Code changes for new construction that are more stringent than those found in the 2021 WA State Energy Code. This recommendation stems from various economic drivers and this policy change relates to other initiatives such as the Building Emissions Performance Standard (BEPS) and the City’s climate action plan.
The 2021 draft Seattle Amendments, including the revised Seattle Energy Code, can be found on the 2021 Seattle Code Adoption webpage.
Seattle will follow the State Building Code Council action of not be implementing the Wildland Urban Interface Code until the WA-Department of Natural Resources develops updated mapping as directed by 2024 WA Engrossed Senate Bill 6120.
If you have questions on using the 2021 code for your project or if there are specific provisions within the 2021 code that you would like to request to use on your project designed to the 2018 codes, please schedule a construction pre-submittal conference.
