Small Business Support with Dedicated Permit Services

We, in coordination with Seattle Office of Economic Development, continue to offer dedicated permit services to tenants of vacant street-level storefronts in downtown Seattle and small businesses citywide. This program aims to support businesses by assisting them in efficiently navigating the permit process and reducing delays. The intent is to provide early coaching to tenants before they sign leases, minimize costly requirements, and streamline the permit process to help businesses open and succeed.

Areas of focus for street-level vacancies and permit prioritization:

  • Pioneer Square
  • Retail Core
  • Chinatown/International District
  • South Lake Union
  • Belltown

Small business permit assistance is available to any qualifying small business citywide.

Ongoing Permit Services

Businesses can benefit from the following services:

  • Research & Early Coaching: A facilitator will assist in researching property details, developing a permit strategy tailored for efficiency, and reviewing application materials to ensure completeness and minimize unnecessary costs.
  • Expedited Permitting: This includes prioritized appointments, faster plan reviews, and a single point of contact to guide applicants through the entire process.

Through the Small Business Expediting Program, SDCI has significantly reduced the time it takes to obtain construction permits. On projects that have received assistance from this program, the time required to review and issue permits has been reduced by 57%.
