New Sprinkler OTC Permits: Faster Process, Lower Cost

What’s changing? A new over-the-counter (OTC) sprinkler permit option is now available in the Seattle Services Portal. Projects on existing systems affecting 24 or fewer sprinklers can receive an OTC permit. This change can save customers 3-7 weeks in permitting while eliminating sprinkler plan review fees and reducing inspection fees for many who are opening a new small business, maintaining or updating multifamily housing, and other tenant improvements.

Why are we doing this? Sprinklers save lives and we want to encourage them in buildings in Seattle.  Seattle Fire Department (SFD) enthusiastically supports Mayor Harrell’s recent Permitting and Customer Trust (PACT) initiative and this is our first streamlining proposal in response. SFD appreciates SDCI’s support in making this change in the Seattle Services Portal.

What do I need to know about the applying for the OTC permit? Please be aware that the Seattle Services Portal is temporarily requiring a plan set to be uploaded on the OTC permit until October 11. However, for an OTC permit affecting <25 devices, no plan set is required, so please upload an equipment sheet or other document to satisfy this portal requirement until it is re-programmed.

Where can I learn more?  Review SFD’s Sprinkler Permitting and Inspections Information Sheet. See also information sheets on Fire Pump Permitting and Inspections and Fire Flow and Hydrant Requirements.

Feedback on this new permit is welcome. Please email sfd_fmo_staffassistant@seattle.gov.
