The Equitable Development Initiative
Office of Planning and Community Development’s Equitable Development Initiative (EDI). The EDI involves many different City departments coordinating to address equity in our underserved communities and displacement as Seattle grows. The EDI is a set of strategies that emerged from our Growth and Equity Report, part of the Seattle 2035 Comprehensive Plan update.
New Commissioners Sought for Seattle Design Commission
Mayor Edward Murray is looking for two new Seattle Design Commission (SDC) members to fill two upcoming vacancies. One position is for a person with a professional background in urban planning, urban design, or landscape architecture. The second position is the at-large, or lay, position. This position has been held by a person in the real estate or development community. We are also interested in people working in the community development field.
Comprehensive Plan Advances – Public Hearing on September 15
This summer, the Mayor’s Recommended Comprehensive Plan took center stage at City Council. The Planning, Land Use and Zoning (PLUZ) Committee is leading the review and will hold a public hearing on Thursday, September 15, to hear your thoughts on their proposed amendments to the Mayor’s Recommended Comprehensive Plan. The public hearing will take place at Council Chambers, City Hall (600 Fourth Avenue, 2nd Floor) at 2:00 p.m. A sign-up sheet will be available at 1:30 p.m.
Council Adopts Rezone Legislation for Bitter Lake Village
On July 25 Seattle City Council adopted legislation to amend the Land Use Code to rezones sites in the Bitter Lake Village Hub Urban Village and to amend development standards. The zoning proposals are based on an inclusive planning process that led to the Broadview – Bitter Lake – Haller Lake Neighborhood Plan update and the Bitter Lake Urban Design Framework that document the community’s development vision for the Bitter Lake Village Center.
Uptown Rezone Draft Environmental Impact Statement
The Seattle Office of Planning and Community Development and Seattle Center are hosting an open house and public hearing on the Uptown Rezone Draft Environmental Impact Study (DEIS). The DEIS process studies all of the potential impacts of zoning (including height change in the neighborhood). This information will be used to develop a rezone recommendation that we will seek input on this fall.

The Mayor’s Recommended Comprehensive Plan was released on May 3! The Plan is a blueprint for how Seattle will grow over the coming twenty years. Its goals and policies are shaped by four core values: race and social equity, environmental stewardship, economic opportunity and security, and community.
Chinatown/International District/Little Saigon Sustainable Neighborhood Assessment Update
A team from Global Green USA completed its site visit to Chinatown/International District, including Little Saigon, between May 9 and 11. The site visit is part of their Neighborhood Sustainability Assessment for the Chinatown/International District based on the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – Neighborhood Development (LEED – ND) standards. The assessment will help the community develop a holistic approach to sustaining the Chinatown/International District/Little Saigon neighborhood’s cultural, economic, social, and historical qualities.

Lake City Proposed Zoning Changes
The Mayor’s Office has transmitted proposed zoning changes and development standards for Lake City to City Council. City Council will hold a public hearing about these proposed zoning changes, along with the Bitter Lake zoning changes, early this summer.
