Seattle’s Design Review Program will be seeking new volunteer board members to join the program in April 2014. Applications will be available in November 2013 on both the Design Review website, as well as on DPD’s blog. We are seeking individuals who are passionate about our built environment and civic engagement.

Seeking Seattle’s Design Review Board Members
Mayor Mike McGinn is looking for qualified candidates to fill nine upcoming openings on the city of Seattle’s Design Review Board. The volunteer positions will be available April 4, 2013 when retiring board members’ terms expire. Board members are appointed by the Mayor and City Council and serve two-year terms. Members serve on one of seven boards that review projects in the city’s major geographic districts.

Design Guidelines SEPA Decision Published
DPD is concluding its work to update the design guidelines that serve as the primary resource for the Design Review Program. The final draft of the Seattle Design Guidelines includes several revisions from the first draft published in March of 2010, reflecting public comment and internal City review. Upon adoption by City Council, the Seattle Design Guidelines will replace the original document entitled Design Review: Guidelines for Multifamily and Commercial Buildings.
Clean-Up Bill for Lowrise Zoning
On December 14, 2010, the City Council adopted Ordinance 123495. This ordinance establishes new development standards for lowrise (LR) multifamily zones, a new administrative design review process for townhouses, and other standards that apply in various zoning designations. In preparing to administer this legislation, staff from DPD has discovered corrections and clarifications that would facilitate use of the new provisions, in keeping with Council’s intent. Most of the amendments are minor technical changes (e.g. correcting outdated formatting and subsection references). The proposed ordinance also contains amendments that are clarifications to provisions or corrections of errors or omissions.

Comments Sought on New Citywide Design Guidelines
The City’s design guidelines, entitled Design Review: Guidelines for Multifamily and Commercial Buildings, have been the cornerstone of Seattle’s Design Review Program since 1994. In 2008, the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) initiated a process to update the 16-year-old citywide guidelines, and recently released a draft for public review.

In 2008 DPD initiated a process to update the 16-year-old citywide guidelines, and is now releasing a first draft for public review.
Administrative Design Review for Townhouses
In order to improve the design and variety of townhouses in Seattle, Mayor Nickels directed DPD to create an Administrative Design Review (ADR) process for townhouses in conjunction with adoption of a Multifamily Code Update. This project will extend Design Review to cover more townhouses in order to raise the overall quality of townhouse design, without adding significantly to project cost or affordability.
