Electric floor heating mats are frequently installed under bathroom floors to warm the flooring. Seattle DCI has learned that some of these floor heaters are being installed and covered before obtaining an electrical inspection.
Washington Administrative Code 296-46B-901(7)(b)(iv) states that placing these floor heating systems are a Class A installation and that “embedding premanufactured heat mats in tile grout where the mat is listed by an approved testing laboratory and comes from the manufacturer with preconnected lead-in conductors” does not require a permit. However, “all listing marks and lead-in conductor labels must be left intact and visible for evaluation and inspection by the installing electrician and the electrical inspector.”
The electrical portion of the installation does require a permit and inspections. Be sure to leave your sensors and electrical lead wire conductors to the controller uncovered until approved by our electrical inspector.
