On June 20, the City Council’s Planning, Land Use, and Zoning Committee will hold a public hearing to take comments on proposed legislation to update rules for maintaining and demolishing vacant buildings. The hearing will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the Seattle City Council Chambers at City Hall, on the 2nd floor at 600 Fourth Avenue.
The proposed amendments to the Housing and Building Maintenance Code (Title 22) and the Land Use Code (Title 23) will:
- Strengthen standards for securing vacant buildings
- Establish an expedited process for removing garbage and other debris from vacant building sites
- Establish an expedited process for demolishing hazardous vacant buildings
- Reduce the amount of time a building on a site in the permitting process must remain vacant prior to demolition
