Snow Safety Guidance for Outdoor Tents

According to the National Weather Service, Seattle could get significant snowfall Thursday night through the weekend. Snow accumulation on tents can cause them to fail and injure the occupants. Temporary tents should not be occupied during periods of snow or ice accumulation, unless they are designed for full structural loading per the Seattle Building Code.

Dining Tents
Seattle restaurants that have outdoor dining tents should take appropriate safety cautions during this weekend’s snow event.

  • Stop using large, outdoor dining tents when snow starts accumulating on the tent.  If you consistently keep the tent canopy free of snow and ice accumulation, you may continue to use the tent.
  • Don’t use smaller tents during periods of snow fall.  Take them down and bring them inside to protect the tent.

Homeless Tents
Small tents are not designed to withstand snow accumulation and may collapse, injuring the occupants. We recommend that those in homeless tents seek a shelter at this for their protection.
