In June the City’s side sewer permitting and inspection functions partially transitioned from SDCI to Seattle Public Utilities (SPU). This first step is part of a change that is expected to be completed by October 1, 2025.
What has changed?
Customers shouldn’t have noticed any changes on the front or back end. In fact, many familiar faces from SDCI have transitioned to SPU and will continue to issue permits and inspect side sewers. We hope it has been and will be seamless for you!
What will change?
- SPU’s Development Services Office will issue side sewer permits and inspections will be completed by SPU side sewer inspectors.
- Side sewer inspections will include the onsite stormwater best management practices, but not the first ground disturbance, preconstruction meetings, or site final inspections.
- The phone number for scheduling inspections will now be (206) 684-3069.
- Core tap billing will be included on the side sewer permit invoice and paid up front, rather than after the core tap is completed.
iWhat won’t change?
- Side sewer permit applications will still be submitted through the Seattle Services Portal.
- Inspections will still be requested online and by phone.
- You can still email Sidesewerinfo@seattle.gov and call (206) 684-5362 with questions about side sewer permitting.
Why the change?
Side sewer care, maintenance and inspection are critical to SPU’s ability to safely and affordably operate Seattle’s drainage and wastewater systems. While SPU is responsible for operating and maintaining over 1,400 miles of sewer pipes, Seattle customers are responsible for over 4,500 miles of side sewer pipes. SPU will now be more involved in how and where people connect to Seattle’s drainage & wastewater systems and can seamlessly direct them to existing City programs that encourage proactive side sewer maintenance and repair.
