SDCI reviews construction permit applications to ensure that they meet safety, environmental, land use, and other requirements. The application process can be complex. Multiple teams at the City review each application. It can take several rounds of back-and-forth between SDCI and the applicant to complete review, approval, and issuance of a construction permit. To help the public better understand the construction permitting process, we’ve developed a Construction Permit Timeline tool that shows the “story” of a permit application in a one-page visualization.
What is the Construction Permit Timeline?
The Construction Permit Timeline is a graphic visualization of how a permit application moves through plan review from intake (when SDCI accepts an application) to issuance (when SDCI issues a permit). After you select a specific permit record number, the tool shows:
- summary data like the project description
- when the application moved back and forth between the City and the applicant
- which teams reviewed the application and when
- the current status of each review
- a link to the record in the Seattle Services Portal, for more detailed information
All of this information is already available in the Seattle Services Portal. However, the Construction Permit Timeline visualizes the data in a way that makes it easier to understand the history and current status of an application.
Why would I use this?
You can use the Construction Permit Timeline any time you need quickly learn about a construction permit’s plan review process. For example, you could use it to:
- understand the status of your construction permit
- determine when reviews were completed
- identify status of active reviews
- research permit history for individual construction permits
- learn about the process of getting a construction permit
The Construction Permit Timeline includes data for construction permits back to 2018. If you’re looking for historical information or for a different type of permit, please reference SDCI’s Research a Project webpage.
Where do I find help understanding the Construction Permit Timeline?
The landing page for the Construction Permit Timeline includes some tips for interpreting the visualization.
