DPD received draft recommendations from the Unreinforced Masonry (URM) Policy Committee in January 2013 for a mandatory seismic retrofit policy for URM buildings. The committee requested a cost-benefit analysis on alternatives. The purpose of the analysis is to provide information for final recommendations by the URM Policy Committee and to inform decisions by the Mayor and City Council on a mandatory retrofit program.

The City of Seattle is looking for qualified candidates to fill 10 positions in the City’s new Living Building and Deep Green Pilot Technical Advisory Group. These volunteer positions are expected to be filled by September 2013 so work can begin immediately following. The role of the advisory group will be to provide recommendations to the Department of Planning and Development on updating the City’s Living Building and Seattle Deep Green Pilot Program, which aims to promote sustainable building and development.
Micro Dwelling Units
DPD has monitored micro dwelling units in Seattle for about two years. We are now evaluating our rules to make sure we have, clear, and consistent regulations. Our evaluation is based on our research and on concerns raised by the public and elected officials.
Developing Small Single-Family Lots
On June 27, DPD made our draft proposal available for public review. We also issued a related environmental review (under the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA)) and decision. You can submit comments or appeal our proposal until July 18, 2013.
Rental Registration and Inspection Stakeholder Meeting May 9
The Rental Registration and Inspection Ordinance requires landlords to register all rental housing units in Seattle, from single family homes to large apartment buildings. Registration will begin in early 2014 with large apartment buildings. We are committed to working with a broad range of stakeholders to ensure that the RRIO program implements Council direction and also reflects the needs and interests of the community. Our meeting on May 9 (at 2PM) will discuss the weighted checklist.
Updating the City’s Stormwater Regulations
Our stormwater code protects people, property, and the environment by controlling how rain water runs off of streets, buildings, and parking lots. This stormwater runoff can cause flooding, landslides, and erosion that can damage our homes, businesses, and property. Stormwater is also the main source for pollutants in our creeks, lakes, bays, and other waterways.
North Rainier Proposed Rezone for the Urban Village
We are proposing to amend the official land use map and the Land Use Code to rezone and apply development standards on areas within the North Rainier Hub Urban Village.
Cross-Laminated Timber
In April 2012, the City Council Planning Land Use and Sustainability Committee was briefed on a novel proposal for use of a new wood product in building construction. DPD is reviewing this proposal that would allow buildings using this wood product to be several stories taller than is allowed by the current (and past) building code.
Revised Effective Date for 2012 Codes
DPD is revising the schedule for adoption of the 2012 editions of the Seattle building, residential, existing building, mechanical, fuel gas, energy, and plumbing codes. We are going to specify that the codes will become mandatory no earlier than October 13, 2013.
