The Department of Neighborhoods will be hosting five inclusive events in the next few months to talk with you about proposed neighborhood changes to create more affordable housing. Each gathering will also feature a handful of other City efforts ranging from parks and trees to transportation and democracy vouchers. The events will be a great one-stop shop for you to learn about a range of topics and share your feedback with the City. All are welcome!

Proposed Code Amendments for Vacant Buildings Are Now Available
On November 3 we released a staff draft of legislation related to the maintenance and demolition standards for vacant buildings, along with our environmental (SEPA) decision. The proposed amendments to the Housing and Building Maintenance Code (Title 22) and the Land Use Code (Title 23) respond to an increase in the problems associated with vacant buildings in the city.
Members sought for Seattle’s Design Review Boards
Mayor Ed Murray is looking for qualified candidates to fill 12 upcoming openings on the City of Seattle’s Design Review Boards. The volunteer positions will be available April 4, 2017, when retiring board members’ terms expire.
Ideal candidates are professionals in the design and development fields who have proven skills and established careers. We are also seeking community and business leaders passionate about civic engagement and shaping new development in their neighborhoods.
New Rat Eradication Rules for Demolition Projects
On January 1, 2017 the updated Seattle Building Code takes effect. The updated code requires all applicants to complete a rat eradication program as a condition to getting a demolition permit. The rat eradication program must be in place on the project site at least 15 days prior to the start of any demolition or any clearing or grading on the site.

Did you know that most landslides occur between the months of November and March? Or that Seattle just set a record for the most rainfall ever in the month of October? As rainfall continues to increase throughout the fall, the threat of landslides will continue to rise this winter.
Reminder: Time to Apply for Grading Season Extension
The rainy season is rapidly approaching, which means it’s time to think about whether you will be doing any grading between November 1, 2016 and March 31, 2017. If your project includes Geotechnical Special Inspections AND if your project is in an environmentally critical area or involves a large quantity of earth-moving, check the Geotechnical Special Inspection assignment letter we sent you shortly after your permit was issued.
