Do you rent in Seattle? The City of Seattle’s Rental Registration and Inspection Ordinance (RRIO) program helps ensure safe and healthy housing for all Seattle renters. Through the RRIO program, we can make sure all rental properties meet minimum maintenance standards. The RRIO Inspection Video is available in English and in the following languages: Amharic, Chinese, Khmer, Korean, Oromo, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Tirgrinya, and Vietnamese.
Earthquake Home Retrofit Seminar
Washington Association of Building Officials (WABO) will sponsor an earthquake home retrofit seminar, on May 14, for builders and contractors. Earthquake home retrofit training provides a consistent, approved approach to the seismic retrofit of older, wood-frame, single-family homes.
Revised: Development Sites Permitting Guidelines
All applications for Land Use and Construction permits need to be reviewed by staff with expertise in various Seattle codes. It is important for all staff to review each project using the same property boundaries, known as a “development site.” This is important to properly conform to code requirements, to provide consistency to applicants and the public, and to allow property records to be easily accessible.
Code Compliance 2015 in Review
2015 was another great year for Seattle DCI’s Code Compliance unit. We: completed our first full year of rental registrations; started registering floating on water residences; worked with Finance and Administrative Services to identify marijuana businesses and get them in for permitting; and saw an almost 50 percent increase in unique contacts to Code Compliance.
Water Service Excavation Pilot
Beginning May 2, 2016, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) will launch a temporary pilot program to allow developers to perform all excavation and pavement restoration work for installing water service (water lines in the right-of-way). The purpose of this pilot is to help reduce the turnaround time for water service installations.

Mayor’s Comprehensive Plan Released This Month
The Mayor’s Comprehensive Plan will be released this month! The Plan is a blueprint for how Seattle will grow over the coming twenty years. Its goals and policies are shaped by four core values: race and social equity, environmental stewardship, economic opportunity and security, and community.
Lake City Proposed Zoning Changes
The Mayor’s Office has transmitted proposed zoning changes and development standards for Lake City to City Council. City Council will hold a public hearing about these proposed zoning changes, along with the Bitter Lake zoning changes, early this summer.
Chinatown/International District/Little Saigon Sustainable Neighborhood Assessment
The Office of Planning and Community Development (OPCD) is partnering with the Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation & Development Authority (SCIDpda) to improve the Chinatown/International District/Little Saigon neighborhood’s environmental performance in ways that will enhance its unique character.
