What Goes Up When the Red Wall Comes Down?
In October 2011 the Urban Design Framework for the Capitol Hill Light Rail Station Sites was finalized. The framework described the community’s vision for the redevelopment of the station sites, offering development guidance and design guidance to the future developers of the station sites. Shortly after the framework was finalized, City and Sound Transit staff began negotiations on the terms of a development agreement. If approved by both the City and the Sound Transit Board, the agreement will outline development standards for the station sites to achieve the goals outlined in the framework. Public comment is being taken through Wednesday October 3.
New Cannabis Regulations Proposed by City Leaders
On Monday, Sept. 10 an intergovernmental team consisting of City staff and representatives from the Mayor’s office, City Councilmembers and the City Attorney set in motion the process to begin deliberations on proposed legislation to establish zoning regulations for growing, processing, and dispensing of cannabis in Seattle. The intent is to help protect city businesses and neighborhoods.
Yesler Terrace Redevelopment Plans Advance
On September 4, the Seattle City Council unanimously adopted five ordinances relating to redevelopment of Yesler Terrace. The legislation included a rezone and changes to the Land Use Code, a Cooperative Agreement between the City and SHA, a street vacation, and a bill relating to environmental review and mitigation.
Shoreline Master Program Recommendations Sent to Council
The Mayor’s recommendations to update the City’s Shoreline Master Program were delivered to City Council on September 4, 2012. The City Council’s Planning, Land Use and Sustainability (PLUS) Committee has scheduled a public hearing for October 15, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.
Join DPD at the Seattle Design Festival
DPD is proud to be a partner of the Seattle Design Festival! The four-day “super weekend” of design, September 20-23, will show how design adds value to our lives, our city, and our region. DPD will have an exhibit showcasing the proposed new urban design element for the Seattle Comprehensive Plan. The exhibit will include interactive maps and other fun activities to gather your comments about Seattle’s design goals.

Regulatory Reform Effective August 31
Mayor McGinn’s regulatory reform package went into effect August 31. The package will promote economic recovery by providing new code flexibility to encourage more investment and business startups in Seattle. By reducing “red tape” and streamlining environmental review processes, it will be easier for entrepreneurs to grow a business and provide new housing with greater flexibility in design. These reforms will help Seattle grow in ways that promote livability and sustainability and are consistent with the Comprehensive Plan’s “urban village” principles.
U District Planning Status
DPD and members of the University District community are about halfway through a planning process intended to update the vision for future development in that neighborhood. The Future Development and Urban Design Working Group has been meeting twice a month since June to discuss topics including housing, streetscapes, open space, and transit opportunities. Our thinking about all of these topics is influenced by the planned 2021 opening of a Link light rail station at NE 43rd St. and Brooklyn Ave NE.
