Deadline Extended for New Construction Codes Advisory Board Members
We have extended the deadline for applications to the Construction Codes Advisory Board to December 6, 2013. Available positions represent organized labor, general contractors, and apartment building owners and operators. As a board member, you would help review codes that affect the design and construction of buildings and Seattle’s built environment. DPD relies heavily on the board’s advice, as do the city’s elected officials.
2014 Seattle Electrical Code Update
The DPD Electrical Program has started reviewing the Seattle Electrical Code for changes in 2014. The last code change was in 2008, so it is time for an update. The update will include reviewing changes in the 2011 and 2014 editions of the National Electrical Code and the latest WAC rules adopted by the State of Washington.
City Council to Consider Omnibus Legislation
DPD is responsible for routine maintenance of the Land Use Code. DPD has prepared code amendments called an “omnibus” bill because it is a collection of amendments. The City Council’s Planning, Land Use and Sustainability Committee will hold a public hearing to take comments on the proposed amendments on December 11, 2013 in the City Council Chambers.
Unreinforced Masonry Retrofit Policy Development Update
DPD has hired a consultant team to perform a benefits cost analysis on the unreinforced masonry (URM) retrofit policy options in the draft recommendations prepared by the URM Policy Committee in January 2013. The analysis will provide information on financing and regulatory implementation options that better align benefits and costs of a possible mandatory retrofit program for URMs. The report will provide more information to the Policy Committee before it makes its final recommendations, and will inform decisions by the Mayor and City Council on a mandatory retrofit program.

Correction: City Council has Approved the 2012 Seattle Codes
The 2012 Seattle building, energy, residential, mechanical, fuel gas, existing building, plumbing and fire codes were approved by the City Council on September 16. The 2012 codes will become mandatory on December 26, 2013.
