The City Council’s Regional Development and Sustainability Committee will hold a public hearing to take comments on DPD’s proposed code changes to support urban agriculture on July 21, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. The hearing will be held in the Council’s Chamber, 2nd floor, Seattle City Hall, 600 Fourth Avenue.
June 21 Deadline for Comments on Side Sewer Code Revisions
Last revised in 2006, the Side Sewer Code and its associated joint SPU/DPD Director’s Rule are being revised in order to clarify existing requirements, address past comments and concerns from stakeholders, and improve City regulatory policies and actions.
CCAB Endorses Draft 2009 Seattle Energy Code With Two Modifications
After three months of public review, DPD and Seattle City Light staff met to decide on initial staff recommendations for the 2009 Seattle Energy Code. These recommendations were subsequently forwarded to DPD’s Construction Code Advisory Board (CCAB) in late April.
CCAB met on May 6, 2010 to discuss the staff recommendations for the 2009 Seattle Energy Code. There was a review of key topics and some questions and comments with resulting recommendations for minor changes to some sections of the text.
Advisory Board Discussion of the Draft 2009 Seattle Energy Code

Council Proposal for New Lowrise Multifamily Zoning
The City Council’s Committee on the Built Environment’s proposal for new lowrise multifamily zoning is available for public review. The proposed legislation would amend the Land Use Code, Seattle’s policies pursuant to the Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) and Tree Regulations to update lowrise zoning and other provisions.
Proposed Urban Agriculture Code Changes Released
The proposed urban agriculture legislation includes recommendations to add and/or clarify definitions of key agricultural terms; expand opportunities for community gardens and urban farms in all zones; allow a 15-foot exception to height limits for rooftop greenhouses dedicated to food production; add farmers’ markets to the definition of a “multipurpose retail sales” use; increase the number of domestic fowl allowed on a lot from three to eight; and, allow existing urban horse farms greater than ten acres to operate as a permitted use in single-family zones.
2009 Seattle Energy Code Draft Gets Additional Public Review and Advisory Board Discussion
DPD is developing a revised public review draft of the 2009 Seattle Energy Code with consideration of the comments received and the direction in Resolution 30280. DPD will release that revised draft in April. DPD will then hold additional public review meetings in April to discuss the revised draft 2009 Seattle Energy Code.
2009 Technical Code Adoption Update
DPD is on schedule for new editions of 6 codes to take effect next summer or fall 2010, close to the effective date of the State codes. Public review of the 2009 Seattle Building, Residential, Existing Building, Mechanical, Fuel Gas and Energy codes is almost complete. We expect the ordinances adopting these codes to take effect in August, followed by a 60-day period during which applicants will have the choice of using the 2006 or 2009 codes.
2009 Seattle Energy Code Public Review Begins
Public review of the draft 2009 Seattle Energy Code – SEC (the 2009 Washington State Energy Code with additional Seattle amendments) will begin in February. DPD has scheduled a series of meetings to discuss proposed amendments. All meetings will take place in the Seattle Municipal Tower (SMT), 700 Fifth Avenue.
Side Sewer Public Meeting — January 26, 2010
The Department of Planning and Development (DPD) and Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) staff will be hosting a meeting to discuss changes and clarifications regarding the Draft Side Sewer Code (Seattle Municipal Code 21.16) and Draft Joint DPD/SPU Directors Rule 7 2008/04-08, Requirements for Design and Construction of Side Sewers (Drainage and Wastewater Discharges).
