March Permit Turnaround Times
DPD is committed to providing good customer service to its applicants. View our Permit Turnaround Times for March 2012.
Unreinforced Masonry Policy Committee
DPD has held three URM Policy Committee meetings to develop recommendations for an unreinforced masonry (URM) seismic retrofit program. If adopted by the Mayor and City Council, the program would require structural improvements be made to URM buildings in order to enhance their ability to withstand earthquakes. The committee has discussed thresholds for retrofit requirements and possible financing options. Future topics will cover incentives and penalties and a timeline for implementation.
Is a New Deck on Your Project List?
Are you planning to build a deck this spring or summer? If so, you should be aware of a few guidelines that could help you through the permitting process. Our CAM 312, Decks, Fences and Arbors for Single Family Homes in Seattle, provides good information on the rules for decks in single-family zones.
Filing for Exemptions
DPD normally requires plans required as part of an exemption request from the shoreline code or environmental critical area regulations.
Electronic Plan Review: Seeking Public Input
For more than two years, DPD has been working with volunteer applicants to test our electronic plan review service. This process will allow customers to submit their plans electronically and provide cost savings by reducing paper usage, time spent reproducing and consolidating plan sets and eliminating most trips to DPD.

Air Barriers and Pressure Testing
Continuous air barriers, capable of preventing air movement through exterior walls, floors and ceilings, have been required by the Seattle Energy Code for more than a year now. These air barriers can either be specially-designed membrane products or can be made up of typical building materials that are carefully joined together into a continuous barrier.
New Rules for Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Last month’s snow, ice and wind gave us a timely reminder about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning during winter power outages. Following our 2006 windstorm, 250 people were treated for carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in the Puget Sound area and eight died, all from either burning charcoal briquettes inside their homes or from improper use of gasoline-powered generators.
