Around 100 people stopped by the Little Saigon Business District planning booth at the August 24 Celebrate Little Saigon festival. Festival-goers from Seattle and other parts of King County including Issaquah, Lynnwood, Bellevue, and Tukwila had a chance to talk with DPD Community Development staff and Friends of Little Saigon volunteers about what they like about Little Saigon and their dreams for the future of the business district.
Low Impact Development
DPD is conducting a systematic review of our regulations to better integrate low-impact development (LID), a stormwater management strategy that strives to mimic natural hydrologic processes. This review is a requirement of our municipal stormwater permit from the Washington State Department of Ecology.
August Publication Updates
DPD updated a Tip about subdivisions and released a draft Director’s Rule about commercial kitchen exhaust hood and ducts. We published four new Director’s rules about elevator seismic design, sprinkler systems, boarding house code requirements, and registration of steel fabricators.
Sustainability Intern – Building Deconstruction
Maximizing the reuse and recycling of building materials is important in reducing our carbon footprint—help Seattle continue this effort. DPD is seeking a paid intern to assist in improving the incentives for the deconstruction of buildings.
New Plan Set Requirements
Since its inception, the e-plan pilot (the DPD Project Portal) has instructed applicants to provide a dedicated space for approval stamps, preferably in the lower right hand corner of each plan sheet. Applicants have typically failed to provide this space, which has made putting approval stamps on the plans laborious and inefficient – which slows down the permit issuance process. Beginning January 5, 2015, plan sets that do not include this dedicated space will be rejected at intake appointments.
Come Celebrate Seattle’s 30th Annual “Night Out Against Crime”
This year marks the City of Seattle’s 30th Annual “Night Out Against Crime” celebration on Tuesday, August 5th. Recently, Mayor Murray laid out a comprehensive public safety plan for Seattle that underscores the importance of providing opportunities for youth and community members to enjoy their streets and public spaces citywide. The Mayor believes Night Out is a great example of the types of opportunities that exist for reconnecting community to Seattle streets. Night Out, an annual national event hosted locally by the Seattle Police Department, shows that residents and City government can mobilize resources and energy together to move toward a safer and more connected Seattle. We hope you’ll join in making this Seattle’s best Night Out yet.
RRIO Program Update
Seattle’s Rental Registration and Inspection Ordinance (RRIO) program is now open for business! You can now register a rental property, find registration due dates, see the RRIO checklist, and get your questions answered by phone or email.
Over-the-Counter Permitting Will No Longer Accept Faxed Applications
In order to improve internal processes and more effectively provide services to our customers, the DPD Over-the-Counter (OTC) Permits unit will no longer accept applications for permits by fax. This change will be effective as of September 1, 2014.
New Legibility Requirements for Some Applications
DPD continues to streamline how we process permits and review applications for short plats, lot boundary adjustments, unit lot subdivision, and full subdivision applications. We are also adjusting requirements to meet King County recording standards.
Guardrail Design
According to a study of deck-related injuries during 2003-2007, failing deck rails (guardrails) were the cause of 33 percent of the structural failures that caused a visit to the emergency room. Failing deck rails caused 26,640 injuries in that 5 year period, nationwide. The Seattle Building Code (SBC) section 1607.8.1 and Seattle Residential Code (SRC) Table R301.5 both require that guards (the code term now used for guardrails) be designed to resist specific forces that simulate an adult falling against or pulling/pushing on a guard.
