Pioneer Square Economic Development Report
Mayor McGinn visited Pioneer Square on March 18 for an annual economic development update. In recognition of the degree to which Pioneer Square was impacted by the economic recession, the City and the neighborhood collaborated in the development of an economic revitalization action plan “Pioneer Square 2015- A Strategy for Seattle’s First Neighborhood” that was completed in June of 2010. Mayor McGinn and Alliance for Pioneer Square executive director Leslie Smith have presented annual progress reports to the neighborhood each year since.
Meeting on 23rd Avenue Action Plan
Things are happening. The beating hearts of the Central Area along 23rd Avenue—at Union, Cherry and Jackson—are where people gather, shop, work, go to school, worship and live … and they are changing. This great neighborhood is full of history, character, shops, organizations, schools and most importantly a community of people from a diversity of backgrounds. It is time to come together to identify key priorities for these three community cores—to honor its history and shape its future.

Preliminary Recommendations for Developing Small Single-Family Lots
DPD’s preliminary recommendations (http://bit.ly/YrPoGI) were presented on the March 14, 2013 meeting of the City Council’s Planning Land Use and Sustainability Committee (PLUS). At that meeting, DPD provided PLUS with a preliminary briefing, so that the committee members could provide guidance to DPD on the recommendations memo before it is presented to the public for comment and discussion.
Interbay Corridor Walk March 10
The valley between Magnolia and Queen Anne is home to trains, industrial yards, storage, services, and a busy traffic corridor, but it is also home to multi-family homes, parks, trails, and many unique businesses. Interbay is growing and changing—over 400 apartments are currently under construction. Interbay is the first phase of a DPD land use study examining a three-mile corridor along Elliot Avenue W and 15th Avenue NW.
2012 Code Adoption Update
DPD is on schedule for new editions of seven codes to take effect next summer or fall. Public review of the 2012 Seattle building, residential, existing building, mechanical, fuel gas, energy and plumbing codes is almost complete. We expect the ordinances adopting these codes to take effect this summer, followed by a 60-day period during which applicants can use either the 2009 or 2012 codes.
U District Livability Partnership Milestones
Since late 2011, DPD has been working with the U District community toward completion of an Urban Design Framework in April of this year. The Urban Design Framework will provide broad guidance for future development, streetscapes, public spaces, and other investments as the neighborhood changes over the coming decades. Much of the change anticipated in the U District will result from the light rail coming on-line in 2021, bringing 12,000 riders to the neighborhood daily.
